Darvaza Gas Crater (Door to Hell), Turkmenistan
The Darvaza Gas Crater, famously known as the “Door to Hell,” is one of Turkmenistan’s most iconic attractions. Located in the Karakum Desert, about 260 km north of Ashgabat, it’s a must-see for adventurous travelers.
This fiery crater was created in 1971, when a gas-drilling site collapsed into an underground cavern. To prevent methane leakage, geologists set the gas alight, expecting it to burn out in a few days—but it has been burning ever since.
Measuring around 70 meters wide and 20 meters deep, the crater glows with constant flames, especially dramatic at night.
Overnight in tents near the crater.

Today, visitors can explore the hauntingly beautiful ruins of medieval minarets, mausoleums, and mosques, some dating back as far as the 12th century. The Kutlug-Timur Minaret, one of the tallest brick minarets in Central Asia, rises dramatically from the desert landscape and offers a powerful glimpse into the architectural grandeur of the Islamic world.
