The Pamir Highway journey begins in Tajikistan’s capital, Dushanbe (elevation 706 m), and gradually ascends into the remote heartlands of the Pamir Mountains, ultimately concluding in the historic city of Osh in Kyrgyzstan. Setting out from Dushanbe, the expedition follows the scenic yet rugged M‑41 route—via Shurobod and Kalaikhumb, the Panj River valley, and over high mountain passes—en route to Khorog, the administrative center of Gorno‑Badakhshan. From there, the route traverses the iconic Wakhan Corridor, passing ancient fortresses, petroglyphs and cultural landmarks such as the Yamchun Fortress and Bibi Fatima Hot Springs. The ascent continues across the starkly beautiful high plateaus, crossing the legendary Ak‑Baital Pass at 4,655 m, before descending to Karakul Lake and onward through the Kyzylart Pass into Kyrgyzstan. The final leg traverses the Alay Valley, through Sary‑Tash, culminating after approximately 1,200–1,300 km in Osh. Throughout the journey, travelers encounter breathtaking high‑altitude landscapes, remote mountain communities, and diverse cultural heritage, capped by the experience of crossing one of the world’s highest international roadways known as the “Roof of the World”
